Building Materials at the Requarth Co.

Grading lumber products establishes quality control standards among mills manufacturing the same or similar woods. These grades provide a dependable measure for determining the quality of lumber.

The Western Wood Products Association (WWPA) sets official grade rules, conforming to American Lumber Standards, for mills in 12 western states. The WWPA grade stamp, visible on White Pine, Spruce-Pine-Fir and other western species sold at Requarth Lumber, is assurance of its assigned grade.

The Southern Pine Inspection Bureau (SPIB) publishes grading rules under which more than 95% of the production of Southern Pine lumber is sold. To qualify for a SPIB grade-making license, a mill must have well-established credentials in manufacturing, seasoning and grading.

Framing Lumber

Pieces are of good appearance but graded primarily for strength and serviceability. Below is a list of stock framing lumber. Additional lumber materials are available upon request. Engineered Lumber

Engineered wood includes a wide range of products manufactured by bonding together wood strands, veneers, lumber or other forms of wood fiber to produce a larger and integral composite unit. Structural engineered wood products are “engineered” by virtue of possessing design values that are confirmed by methods other than simple visual grading. APA divides structural engineered wood products into four general categories: 1) wood structural panels, including plywood, oriented strand board and composite panels; 2) glued laminated timber (glulam); 3) structural composite lumber (SCL), including primarily laminated veneer lumber (LVL), but also parallel strand lumber and oriented strand lumber; and 4) wood I-joists.

Plywood and OSB

Although different in composition and appearance, plywood and oriented strand board are manufactured according to the same performance standards. These standards apply uniform performance criteria to both products for their designated end uses — wall sheathing, roof sheathing, subflooring (APA Rated Sheathing) and single-layer flooring (APA Rated Sturd-I-Floor). The standards are recognized by all of the major model building codes. These products can withstand moisture and exposure during building construction, but are designed to be covered or secured in protected locations. Additional materials are available upon request. Please ask your salesperson. 937-224-1141

Cedar Lumber

Naturally durable wood resists weather better than most untreated woods. Straight grain and uniform texture. Cedar‘s natural preservatives may leach to unprotected nails leaving a black stain. Use hot-dipped galvanized or stainless steel deck nails. Treat Cedar with stain, paint or some other wood preservative.
