Andersen Windows, 2014 Consumer Reports Best Buy Over Pella or Marvin.

The Andersen 400 Series ranked number one best buy by Consumer Report (2014). Actually, three of the top ten are Andersen 400 Series, Andersen E Series (Eagle), and Andersen A Series. Pella did make a single appearance while Marvin did not make the top ten.

“This CR Best Buy is top rated and excelled at low-temperature wind resistance so your home won’t get drafty when the wind howls. The exterior of the wood window is clad in vinyl and won’t need painting”. – www.consumerreports.org/

5 Tips When Choosing Replacement Windows

Oh, if only you could have Home Extreme Makeover’s Ty Pennington swing by with his team and replace all of your old windows with beautiful new energy efficient ones that fit your style. Life would be great! Particularly if they could get it all done in an hour like on TV! In real life, however, window replacement is one of your most complex and resource-consuming home improvement projects.

Shawn Miller, Green Certified Professional (NAHB) and former home builder spent 27 years in the industry before becoming Manager of Operations at the Requarth Co. Shawn believes it is important for consumers to appreciate the complexity of window replacement and invest the time to choose the correct window for their house rather than risk being persuaded by marketing gimmicks that are designed to get them to buy today.

“It’s easy to fall for the barrage of advertising that boasts free installation, or two windows for the price of one, or the $99 window, and on and on. Informed consumers know that nothing is free. You will pay for it one way or another, if it’s a marked up window that covers installation cost, a poorly constructed window that will require replacement in a few years, or that will cost you on your energy bill,” Shawn said. “There are great windows out there from respected manufacturers at competitive prices.”

Ask Yourself Why. Are you looking to improve the comfort in your home? Save on your heating and cooling bills? Change the look or preserve an historically accurate appearance while utilizing modern energy efficient technology? Improve ease of cleaning and maintenance? If you have a neighborhood association or live in an historic district, you’ll need to know what is required.

Educate Yourself. All windows are not created equal. Modern window frames are still manufactured from traditional materials like wood and vinyl, but there are also new advanced materials like wood composites or extruded aluminum to consider. Glass option can also be a major factor in the look and energy efficiency of your windows. Insulated glass can be confusing with names like Low-E, SmartSun™, Dual-Pane, Tripane with Krypton, Tripane with Argon. Cosmetic options are also available in stained, beveled and tinted glass. A good window showroom and an experienced salesperson can demystify the technology in today’s windows. Don’t forget to think about how you would like your windows to open: casement, double hung, awning, or sliding?

Prioritize the details. Once you know what options are available, you can prioritize them. What’s a must? What would be nice? This will help you understand where to splurge and where to save. When choosing a clad wood window the details are endless from the combination of exterior colors, interior wood species, interior wood finished, hardware styles and finishes, glass options, grill styles, interior trim and exterior trim. When choosing vinyl, your options are white on white with little detail, but they are the most cost effective.

Budget. Do your homework to find out what windows cost and what your personal finances can handle. Size matters, so it is always best do some rough measurements before you visit a showroom. A clad wood window is generally 80% more than a standard vinyl window. Installation is not free regardless of what the marketing may say. As a general rule, standard installation cost is 30% to 50% of the total project’s budget.

Murphy’s Law. “We hate to see it, but always assume your installer will uncover an issue like hidden water damage when removing your old windows,” Shawn said. Set aside a little budget in a “surprises” fund, since they are inevitable.
Installation, Installation, Installation. Your new windows are only as good as the installation. Verify that your installer has been trained by the manufacturer on proper installation techniques for your brand of window and that he will stand by the installation. Poor installation can result in water damage to your home and void your window’s warranty. A quality window installation generally takes four to six hours per window. With Andersen Windows, look to see if your dealer is an Andersen Circle of Excellence dealer. This means the dealer is factory trained and authorized by Andersen to perform factory warranty work and service.

When you make the decision to move forward, and upgrade your home with beautiful new windows, follow these five tips. Windows are a major purchase that you want to get right the first time. Take your time and feel good about whom you are working with.
